The Boston Celtics kept the core group of a fading 2008 championship team together.
If they do not win a second Larry O'Brien trophy with this group, it will be deemed a failure.
Danny Ainge gave Ray Allen and Paul Pierce two and four year contracts respectively—Pierce having the longer off the two. Therefore this upcoming season may be the best window of opportunity for Pierce, Allen and Kevin Garnett to win before the Miami Heat trio learns to share the ball well.
After that the jury is out on how they would fare against the more athletically skilled players who play the same position.
The Celtics are a contending team who will not be able to bring in perceived top tier talent through the draft. They will not be able to pick any higher than possibly the 18th pick in the draft.
This year they selected 6'3'' SG Avery Bradley is projected to be Rajon Rondo's understudy.
The long shot here is Boston’s’ other draft choice, the 52nd pick, Luke Harangody.
Harandody gives me the same warm fuzzy feeling I had when I first saw Scottie Pippen play. I saw a player who could do so many things on the court alongside Michael Jordan through his continued hard work off the court.
Cool Hand Luke may have to be the stop gap measure until Ainge finds that dynamic offensive star that will take pressure off of Rondo.
Harangody doesn't have the athletic talent or the same kind of game as Pippen, however he has a certain grit that will ensure that he will be highly regarded among his peers.
That leaves Marquis Daniels as the only veteran presence in support of Pierce and Allen. If last year is any indicator as to what to expect from Daniels then the Celtics are in trouble. Von Wafer, the other wing addition is more in the mold of Eddie House than you think.
This also brings up the question as to why Tony Allen has not signed with his new team yet. One would think after he basically said he preferred playing time to ubuntu that he would sign his new contract already.
The Memphis Grizzlies are also at an impasse with rookie Xavier Henry. Henry's a player who was projected to be available at the 19th pick in the 2010 draft. Memphis is also not thrilled with Mike Conley as their starting point guard.
Was there a pre-draft deal made between Chris Wallace and Danny Ainge that will only come to fruition once Allen signs his new deal?
The last time they talked the Celtics ended up with Kendrick Perkins and a championship five years later.
Let us hope that if this possibility becomes truth that it is not another five years before we see a duck boat parade in Boston.
